I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he was joking.
All I know is that it made me laugh.
Only that he was serious and you gave him a nice way out of a really embarrassing situation. Makes me wonder where you've been for the past few years...
This happened yesterday: While I was installing equipment at a chain grocery store one of the customer service persons was a little uptight about the situation, deploying my charming sense of humor I was able to set her mind at ease. I stayed after I was finished with my work and talked with her & coworker about the training session for new equipment. It seemed to make her happy, but I guess she would be the one to confirm that.

Ack...apparently the smell of sarcasm in my post wasn't all that obvious.
As for getting him out of an embarrassing situation, I think you're underestimating some of our fellow posters' intelligence.
I'm not good at these things but I did go to a very sad wake for a fairly young woman who lost a protracted battle with cancer. She was a wonderful, extraordinary woman, and I told her family so. I also told her husband our loss, heaven's gain...he said he never really thought about it that way and actually smiled and seemed to find some comfort in that. Then I knelt at the pew in front of the casket and said a few Hail Marys and the Lord's Prayer. I hugged the kids and told them I wa sorry for their loss. Then I left. I hope seeing everyone come to pay their respects and offer their condolonces and support made them at least a little happy under the circumstances.

I saw this really homely, slightly overweight, below average looking, frumpy, 30ish year old woman walking in the mall today. I smiled at her and said "Hello". Made her day. Probably made her year.
For those of you who are wondering, YES, this really did happen. And YES, it really did make her day.
I think the majority of you know how it feels to be overlooked by handsome men because of how you look. So when one, takes the time to greet you with a warm smile and says hello to you, it really does make you feel nice.
