It really depends on what kind of a guy he is and what his interests are. I do agree with those who suggested that you should do something special and pick up the tab as a way of celebrating his birthday. Going to some sort of event might be easier than trying to figure out what kind of a present he might like. There are countless things to do where you are so it shouldn't be hard to come up with something creative.

No champagne.

No cupcakes.

I would see what sort of local events are going on and maybe have a nice dinner followed by a concert in the park/river cruise/long walk in some romantic place, etc.

What about a night at a comedy show? guys seem to like that. What are his interests? Tickets to sports games, comedy shows, and live bands (that he likes or at venues he enjoys) are all pretty safe choices with most guys.

He's def a huge fan of live music so that's a great suggestion.

How long have you been dating? I wouldn't get too carried away...I think it's better to keep things very low-key until you guys know each other well enough to be able to figure out what the other one wants. Of course I'm not a terribly sentimental sort on the issue of birthday celebrations.

Something fun like taking in a show, perhaps the Blue Man Group? Something memorable.
