It's not that serious to catch feelings over being called Ms. It's a sign of respect for goodness sakes When people call me sir or Mr. I appreciate it because to me, that's a respect thing. I wish I could own a woman, provided she came with a money-back guarantee, extended warranty, etc.
At work today a co-worker told me that she hates being called "Mrs." I asked her why and she replied she is her own person and is not "owned" by any man.
Just goes to show that we all work with some dumb people.

Now men have Mr. (and you can't tell if they're married...whereas Mrs. you can). And men are called "Sir" which can really sounds more respectful an not old-ladyish like "Ma'am".
"Ms." was invented as an equivalent to "Mr." for exactly the reason you said. You can't tell if the person is married, unlike "Miss" or "Mrs."
As for the origins of "sir" and "ma'am," "sir" comes from "monsieur," or "my sire," which means "my lord." "Ma'am" comes from "madame," or "my lady." They are equal terms of respect.

The only reason she did take his last name was for the sake of the children she knew they'd have one day. She told me she's always believed this way...even as a young girl.
I see this thread going downhill fast. LOL I think that the statis pf a husband and wife are between them. I do not believe that being a Mrs. or a Ma'am makes you property. It is simply a social designation that allows the rest of the world to relate to you in a certain way.
You cannot own people. Either they are there of their own free will or they are not. Having someone's last name does not mean that you are owned. These are all issues that are optional and chosen and agreed upon.

Yeah, taking the thought of the OP and expanding on it, does the OP think her parents "own" her because she has their name?
Traditionally husbands and wives belong to each other, so yes your husband does own you, and you own him. Anyone who finds that concept distasteful should probably not get married!

Choosing a partner and committing to a relationship isn't the same thing as ownership of a person.
