I just looked at her like she was crazy. I couldnt believe it. My job pays ok.(I work in an entry-level position at one of the Big 4 Banks) People tell me I look well off,but I'm 24 and living at home, so I have to disagree....anyway...how would have you responded to that?
I would have told her it pays me well enough to pay for my bills but not this one ( assuming you were going to pay the bill if you were in a restaurant) and walked out leaving her with the bill to pay.
Americans do seem far more inquisitive and open about salaries ( I have been asked that question quite a few times and have always been honest though it seems odd as a European, most Europeans would blanch and freak out and find it totally unacceptable) but bloody hell NOT on a date.
That to me is not only intrusive , it shows a complete lack of social skills and implies a mercenary nature which is not appealing. Someone you are on a date with should be a little more sensitive and restrained, trying to ascertain the thickness of your wallet and the size of your bank account is churlish, disturbing and quite frankly repellent . Not a good sign for the future I would say.
It's a matter of context. It could be rude or invasive or maybe she just used the wrong words and it sounded bad. Given the state of this economy she may have simply meant "how are you doing". I imagine these tough times come up at a certain time in one way or another.
