For what its worth stillhangin, my lovely bride lets hers go long, cuts it, donates the hair to locks of love, which turn it into wigs for kids with cancer. Maybe you can reach a happy compromise, after all, hair always grows back.

I am not a guy, but I know it has been said women past 35 shouldn't have long. I don't always agree, but whatever you do, don't go supershort.
I would first try should length or a little longer with some long layers to see how you like it. It's a lot more versatile than a boy style haircut.

It can always be grown back. I know what you mean about looking "polished;" I love my hair long but if I let it grow too long, it makes me look less professional and a little childish. I like to keep my hair at least a couple of inches past my shoulders.

ask your mother or a close friend, they'll tell you the truth on whether it's time to cut, or post a picture so we can all see. I think women should keep it long for as long as they can - then there comes a point where it makes you look older

LOL, What emjbulls said. I also want to add that it is obvious that you want a change or you wouldn't be asking about it. I say if you want to cut your hair in a new style, then go for it.

A woman can get by with long hair up to the age where her facial skin begins to sag a little. The long hair makes her look a little dragged down. She needs a cut that's somewhat short enough to fluff up a little on top and around the sides so as to off set the longer lines of her face.
I hope that makes sense.
If you don't want to create a big fuss around the house, First just get it trimmed about an inch. I'm betting he won't notice. Then, next week, Begin getting the top layered in a bit. And go from there to what you want.
After all, It is your head.

I know a very beautiful 45 year old woman that had golden blonde, waist length hair. She cut it to shoulder length. She now looks ten years younger. It was the best thing she ever did.
