I think sometimes it's that people are so afraid of their own mortality, coupled with their knowledge that they are at heart sinners, that they start to blabber on and on.

How so? Look at the people all around us - they constantly carp that they don't have enough time to do what they want to do. How would they get right with God except by pleading lack of time?
