and it begs the question...and what are YOU going to do to impress the man?...answer...'nothing just look pretty, afterall he is lucky enough to be here with me..' thats how some women think...SOME not all but quite a few

Thanks for saying it for me, Sierra.
Good grief, people. By all means don't bother with anything nice when you ask a woman out. Maybe you shouldn't bother asking them out in the first place. Think of all the trouble it would save you!

Some of you may be feeling too much hostility to date.
This was all in response to coupons on a first date. Remember?
Sorry, but there are plenty of nice women who don't think they suffer from entitlement issues because they expect a decent first date. No one asked the men to jump through hoops.

I believe her quote was " special occasion" does not sound like a "simple dinner", SierraAZ. At least I do not think of the two words as being synonymous.

Well, getting to know a new person SHOULD be a special occasion and if it's not, yes, don't even bother.

This thread is making me thank my lucky stars that the men I've dated don't find a first date to be a mystery that no human being can decipher.

I think you guys are destined for disappointment.
Firstly, stop making dating so clinical & scientific. Stop minimizing body language, non verbal cues & gestures. Not only do they convey intent just as much as words do, but they are a part of romance. Stop measuring the value of a word against the value of a smile, a touch or eye contact. You're taking all the fun out of it.
Secondly, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. If you would just stop worrying about what the other side should or shouldn't do, and concentrate on making the best effort, you may wind up pleasantly surprised.
Wow, I'm so glad not to be dating.
