This is my conclusion, I am 34, single, no kids, never been married, probably never will, I don't even understand why people in the USA are so obsessed with this very antiquated concept.
We are really lucky. We had early marriage problems. I went on a group like this one. And got my butt handed to me. The wake up call spawned a period of learning. The skill at relationship that both of us gained allowed us to get past the problems. And what that opened up for us was/is a degree of intimacy that is just wonderful. The knowledge that he loves me no matter what. That he has shown again and again and again. Being able to give caring to him and know it will never be taken for granted.
I don't have any strong feelings about the civil institution of marriage. I think it serves a purpose for our children. I am not religious so there is no meaning for me there. But the life long committed relationship with my husband? Absolutely the most important thing in my life.
I was married two times for a total of 41 years, both husbands are deceased. I have no children by choice, so why I married...I have no clue, I guess it was because that it was what I was supposed to do. In all the years I was married, not one person I was socially involved with, asked to see my marriage certificate, so, I ask myself, what was the point? I could have just said..yes..we are married.
I now feel that the financial ramificatios of being married , far out weigh the benefits.
Will I ever marry again...no....does it bother me because others find it so important...no...it is their choice, and, I could care less.
