My Mom worked on her own sewing machine and it appeared she could fix just about anything she tackled. My wife can't fix anything but is good at programming a VCR. Both were/are good cooks, and that is all that really matters to me. I can fix what my wife can't, and I don't mind one little bit.

Any how, I was recently engaged in another thread where charges were made regarding ability and gender. I'm curious as to what the rest of you think.
what is a great way to learn how to tackle these on hand tasks? I don't feel like I get a real opportunity to do so on a daily basis.
I guess it depends on what on-hand tasks you're thinking of. I'm a home-owner, so it seems to be endless. But, I bought a fixer-upper, so maybe there's less opportunity in newer homes.

I didn't have a dad like that either. But, I have DIY books and youtube. Youtube is such a great resource for projects.
Definitely, from small to larger projects. For example, our dryer stopped working. I googled "dryer not working" from there I was able to pin point a few possibilities. I found a diagnosis site on one of the how-to sites available and after reading a few Q/A I found "Is the motor running, but not spinning?"
Yes. From there I read answers where it was usually a snapped belt. From there I went to youtube on how to replace a snapped belt. I brought my laptop down to the basement and did a play-by-play. I removed the screws, bolts, etc and the front cover. Looking at the drum I could see the belt and indeed, it was snapped in half. I took out the drum, grabbed the belt, and went to a parts store. I went back home and replaced it. All the while following the steps in the vid that I would pause as I went along.
I've done the same for installing flooring, doors, etc. Of course, I educated myself in the process by reading, but it's advantageous to actually watch someone doing it.
