I met a girl yesterday for something to eat after work, just platonically. She is breaking up with her boyfriend and has to find a new place so they won't be living together anymore. We mostly talked about other things of which we have a lot in common and is unusual to find someone of those shared interests.
Anyway, I was a little curious to hear about the boyfriend or ex boyfriend. She avoided saying anything, by just shrugging and saying "it is what it is". I guess it's smart not to get into messy break up talk, but what does "it is what it is" mean? It's just so vague sounding that it has no meaning. But I got the impression that she is breaking up with him. Otherwise she'd be into venting over it.
In this circumstance "it is what it is" means: "Leave me alone, I don't want to talk about it".
yeah, i thought it was pretty funny. i was fishing for the gossip, but it didn't work. i didn't ask any more about it. it was all good though, because she made plans with me for next weekend to look at plants we both like. it's getting really nerdy, because she is going to get a book about those plants from the library, to study up on, before going plant watching.

I personally use "it is what it is" as pretty much a resignation that the situation is out of my control and anymore emotion or effort put into it would be useless.
makes sense. it is what it is, implies that something is unchangeable and just deal with it. and what ever it is is not a good thing. i'm not going to ask about it again.

I think your answer is better than mine.
She's got one foot out the door. Could be good for you.

Just a little advice for the future, it's never a good thing to keep asking a woman about her break-up when she doesn't want to volunteer this information herself. Wait for her to open up to you.
