The "beaches" bordering Turnagain Arm of the Cook Inlet (and some in Anchorage) are actually mudflats and are notorious for harboring quicksand-like conditions. It seems like people get stuck every year, and someone dies every couple of years. Apparently, it sucks you in pretty fast, and rescuers can't always reach you in time or can't extract you if they are able to reach you. Furthermore, these mudflats are exposed at low tide and often appear firm for walking on, then...BIG SUCTION! You don't want to be stuck when the 30 foot tide returns!
My brothers and I used to play by a river that sometimes would have quicksand conditions after rain.
I lost both shoes once after sinking halfway in and the suction nearly broke my back when they pulled me out.
She is amazing. I have to pinch myself everyday...just to make sure it's not a dream!
