I'm a 23 year old black man who is a college student. I usually take public transportation to get to where I need to go since I'm still in the process of getting my first car. I have to say there is one thing that I don't understand at all.
Usually, when I'm walking down the street, on the bus, or on the train, I notice as women around my age pass by, when all I do is take a look that's only a few seconds or less, when that's all I'm doing and not actually interested in them, even when I'm looking down at my smartphone, they have something negative to say about me behind my back. Different women on different days I noticed do this on a regular basis but I wanted nothing to do with them in the first place. What's going on here?
Some, not all. When I'm not even paying attention to them in the first place they sometimes say under their breath or to one of their friends that I'm weird.

Ok, don't get it, if you're not paying attention to them, how do you know all this?

Maybe they are weirded out that you are staring directly at them for thee full seconds? That's my best guess. They must think you are checking them out. Generally women don't liked to be obviously checked out by total strangers walking by them in the street. Maybe you could smile their way or say hi? That might relieve the awkward behind-the-back comments. Most people on public transport don't make eye contact at all.
The worst is when you and the other person are the only ones on the sidewalk or walking down a really really long hallway in opposite directions and you see them from like 50 yards away. It's funny when those people don't even smile or say hello back even though you've been approaching each other on foot for 45 minutes.
Staring for a few seconds? You realize that's rude, right?
