You two went on 5 dates, and then he disappeared for 3+ weeks? Ahh, there had better be a death in the family, would be the ONLY excuse I would accept.
A death, illness, car accident, natural disaster, major depression, getting surgery, major family problems would be the only good reasons.
Could be I had one of those when I was young. And his wife talked to me and said it's not my fault he had done this before. After I chewed him out. I asked her why the heck are you staying with him!!
Seriously, anything else will only encourage more of the same bad behavior...basically saying it's okay to treat me like crap. You need love your self and move on!

I wouldn't accept most of those as a reason. If he needed to be gone for 3 weeks he should have sent a quick email or text saying so he would get back in touch with her.
Why didn't you call to talk to him the first few days? 3 weeks means there is no relationship to save.
