I was just curious if you consider meeting up for the first time to be a "date" when done from an online dating site. I don't because I think dates insinuate some mutual interest is already established whereas simply meeting up for the first time is to see if there is any interest in the first place. Thoughts?
I guess it depends on the situation... I would have to say sometimes yes and sometimes no. However, when I say 'no', I would consider them something along the lines of a 'blind date'. We still refer to blind dates as a date... yes, no?
Yes on classifying it as a date would be the rare occasions that there was an excess of conversation. I had one guy where we emailed, talked on the phone and chatted for several weeks and really built up the anticipation... And then there are just a few, after emails and talking on the phone, that they were dates in my mind.
If it is just meeting off of a few emails... that is a "meet". And those are very few and far between. It's a safety issue, and for those who can not understand that... Well, you should.

Sure why not?
ETA: haven't done the online dating thing for about quite a long while now, but when I was doing online dating, yes I would have considered each outing a "date", if only b/c every one had the traditional "dating" elements, such as taking the gal to lunch/dinner/coffee, maybe a movie or ice cream afterward, doing some other activities around town, etc.
...curious if you consider meeting up for the first time to be a "date"
when done from an online dating site. I don't because...
...because it isn't one.
It's meeting someone for coffee...
and maybe! getting enough sense of them to decide if you want to do more of that (or not).
NOTHING more.
fwiw... don't commit to staying for more than an hour for this meet.
And don't delay having this first meet.
Don't invest in a lot of email and messages and all that before this meet.
Until after you've had a chance to be under the same sky" as them for that hour or so...
you just won't know.

No. To me, it's simply a first-meet. Short and sweet, with few expectations. If you see each other a second time, then it's a date.
If, I go through the effort of meeting a woman online it's typically going to be a date and I specifically state it as being such. Especially if its dinner. On the other hand If I want to meet someone for a quick check out to determine if we should go any further or to see if shes been sending me fake or old pictures I will go for the "Meet up", typically at a bar.

Cool. That's what I'm doing tonight. Going out for a drink.
