I think it would be very helpful if you actually gave him some examples rather than just generally suggesting he "ask questions". If you could provide a list he could then print it out and use examples without having to go through the agony of coming up with something himself.

TV, if a guy's first communication to me is "hey, you have a very pretty smile!" I would probably also just say "thanks" and end it there. Even if he IS my type. I mean, what else is there to say? By the way, it's kind of a turn off to compliment someone you don't know right off the bat.
