Dating Girl with Hefty Student Loans
Hi,
I've been dating a girl for about two months and recently she told she will have approximately $150,000 in student loans once she graduates in a couple of months. She is going to school full-time and does not have a job, so this amount will not decrease in the interim. However, she will graduate with her master's degree in a high-demand field where the average starting salary is $75,000. I'm trying not to let the debt drive me away from her because I really like her, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to take on that kind of debt if things get more serious. For reference, I am under 30 and have no debt. Any opinions?
Thanks!

Geez, I don't care how much in demand this field is or what her salary is (which isn't all THAT much), unless it goes up to 200K+ in a jiffy. This is a 30-year mortgage and NO house in many locations.

That is not debt! Think of it as her asset. Once she is done with school she will make it back in no time since she is in a high demand field.
Don't let this debt affect your relationship. GL.

I made the dumb-ass mistake of co-signing one of my ex-wife's student loans. The bastards are harassing me for money several times a day for an education I didn't receive and one I'll never benefit from.
That's an awful lot of money. I would have a frank discussion with her on her plan to repay it. Just remember that if you two get married and share an income, they'll take both incomes into account in terms of repaying it, not just hers.

Nurses have been paying off their doctor husbands loans since forever...only to get left in the dust when the loan is paid off...money is streaming in and Dr.Feelgood wants his trophy wife! This scenario only seems weird because of the gender reversals!!

Yes, if you have the skills and demand in the market.
It is all relative.
For example, if a person only has 1k debt but he is unable to work, then that is bad.

lol same argument can be made in divorce cases where men get raped with a pool stick tho...
Anyway, my wife and I met when neither one of us had a penny. We worked hard to get to where we are now...so i have no experience in helping the OP. Ive tried putting myself in his shoes..on one hand my heart tells me to say if i love her it wouldnt matter but my head then says what if she drops dead tomorrow...the bill collectors will come after me...so i dont know. I'll let people with more experience offer their input.
