I am thinking it is more cultural and customs differences more than anything.

no no no..nothing is offensive as long as its during hannukah. I get offended receiving gifts on xmas, really. but I don't say anything because well, its the thought that counts. I just feel a tad disrespected when my difference to any joe schoe Christian isn't recognized and therefore the gift is given to me on xmas. One of my best friends never gives me gifts on xmas..and she always teases me about my "jewness" even though I never act Jewish anyways. our get togethers this time of year include gift exchanges for "xmas presents" on xmas day..never hannukah.

I bought my jewish friend a candle and a nice lipstick. She seemed to like to like it just fine. I shopped for her the same way I shopped for my christian friends. Not sure what the big deal is.
