Sometimes you hear people being described this way, as if it's a compliment. Or perhaps you read personal ads on dating sites, and people use these terms to describe themselves. Either way, here's how to decode what they really mean. Please add to the list!

He’s so full of life= He's exhausting, like a child

Such a big personality= loud and probably fat

Spontaneous= impulsive

Adventurous= into kinky stuff

So well-grounded= can be rigid and frustrating

She just lights up a room= has to be the center of attention and will make a scene if necessary

He’s so comfortable in his own skin= flamboyantly gay

She’s so down to earth= kind of boring, and could use a little makeup

A free spirit= no goal in life, can’t stick to a decision or hold a job, unreliable

His heart’s in the right place= he screws up a lot, but means well

She’s socially conscious= will annoy you with talking politics constantly

Meh, I think the descriptions on the right side are what a pessimist would say.

I like those compliments and don't think there's a hidden meaning.

"Pessimist" to you, "realist" to me.

Just keep my interpretations in mind if someone uses one of those descriptions for someone they are trying to set you up with.

OP, that's a funny list . what some of the posters said about pessimist vs. realist & this list reminds me of my CBT therapy and why it doesn't work. To me, it's just a bunch of 'spinning' negative or bad things into something else so it doesn't sound quite as bad. LOL.

I have known people who use compliments like those to suggest things, if they want to "hide" what they are saying.

Reminds me of the joke from When Harry Met Sally:

Quote:
Jess: When someone's not that attractive, they're always described as having a good personality.
Harry: Look, if you had asked me what does she look like and I said, she has a good personality, that means she's not attractive. But just because I happen to mention that she has a good personality, she could be either. She could be attractive with a good personality, or not attractive with a good personality.
Jess: So which one is she?
Harry: Attractive.
Jess: But not beautiful, right?

I guess if you are interested in spinning, find your true trait on the right side (be honest with yourself) and then use the description on the left side to describe yourself.

The When Harry Met Sally thing reminded me of a Kathy Griffin standup. something like
Cute=pretty but short
Exotic=Pretty and black
Striking=Pretty with a big nose
I forget the rest.
