Default Friendly vs. Flirtatious

Ok tell me your thoughts.

What defines friendly and what jumps over into the flirtatious category?

Sometimes the only difference is the intent.

I can see how these signs can be mis-interpreted, for instance.

Don't ask men.

They don't know.

Thats tricky. Personally, I get a little more touchy feely once I am actually flirting. Friendly is a quick touch on the arm or shoulder. I'll touch a bit to be friendly, somewhere neutral.

Flirty: holding on to arm or shoulder. Touching your knee. And keeping physical contact consistently through the entire conversation.

I guess I'd say quick vs prolonged physical contact.

Obviously! Why else would she talk to you.

(I make small talk for small talk's sake. Even to people I have zero interest in. Usually to relive boredom of pass the time quicker. Men, women, children. All fair game for me.)

Well duh! What other reason do girls have to talk to us guys!?!

Seriously though, I don't think there is any real answer to this. It really just depends on the person.

Friendly is innocent. Flirtatious is overt/covert.

When a person is friendly, they are friendly and treat others in a respectful manner as they would anyone else. No special treatment.

When someone is flirtatious, they treat the other person with special attention in a way that's comes off innocently seductive or plain naughty, and is both covert/overt.

I've been wondering myself. There's a lady I know who I suspect is flirting. There's only one way to find out, the man has to ask her out and see her reaction. But in my case asking this woman out would be a bad idea, so I'll never know the answer!
