That's actually not the etymology of the word woman:
woman late O.E. wimman (pl. wimmen), lit. "woman-man," alteration of wifman (pl. wifmen), a compound of wif "woman" (see wife) + man "human being" (in O.E. used in ref. to both sexes; see man). Cf. Du. vrouwmens "wife," lit. "woman-man." The formation is peculiar to English and Dutch.

You are stunningly wrong. "Broad" is and always was a rude and contemptuous term for a woman.

The Mavens' Word of the Day

"Noun, Current amongst genteel grafters chiefly. A female confederate; a female companion, a woman of loose morals. Broad is derived from the far-fetched metaphor of 'meal ticket,' signifying a female provider for a pimp, from the fanciful correspondence of a meal ticket to a railroad or other ticket."

Interesting choice of words... Didn't you mean "male"?

I first heard of "female" being insulting about 3 months ago. I used to be on the dating site OKC and while I was corresponding with someone I used "female."

She told me it was "insulting" and using that term referred to women as "livestock." I cut off communication with her right after that because the time before that she also took offense to something I said. I decided I could not talk to anyone if I have to walk on eggshells all the time.

I don't see anything wrong with female but I do not recall using it since. She was quite angry about it. I would never use "broad" or "chick" even though a few women on CD use the latter in their user name.

The word is offensive based on its context. For example, if a guy tried to ask me out by trying to compliment me by saying "I like females like you because..." instead of saying women I would be offended.

I mean, come on. I can't believe how any of you can't see how saying male and female instead of man and woman doesn't sound ignorant. :/ I know I would be looked at half crazy if I said "Would you males like a glass of water?" instead of "Would you guys/men like a glass of water?". lol

No, the word isn't offensive based on it's context but it could be used in a context that would allow it to be percieved as offensive. Like every other word.

It's not offensive, but it's grating to hear adjectives used as nouns.

Two blacks were in front of me at the store. They were talking to three gays, a cripple, and a female. (Crowded store.)

I'm not insulted to be called a female. My reaction is on par with hearing someone say "irregardless" or write "definate."

Tired of females that are of the "I am woman hear me roar" set...picking on young woman who call themselves anything but a WOMAN..- I guess the feminist eccentrics would like to get more politically correct and get rid of the term GIRL---and use the term little woman- but that would be going full circle back to the 50s.......lol..

On the same level of this thread, there was a post a few months ago by a woman who thought the word "womb" was inappropriate and wondered by people didn't always say "uterus" instead.

I didn't get that one any more than I get this new thing with "female" suddenly being considered disparaging. Words that have been used for centuries.

I guess we'll know that female is really considered a "bad word" when City-Data starts covering it with asterisks.

And I just saw another "weary" for "wary" in a post yesterday, that one seems to be gaining ground...OOPS, wrong thread, Julia!

By why do you not consider female a noun? I'm not understanding that part, either. "The female of the species has brown feathers." That is not a noun?

So what..I made my point. Thanks for the heads up...what is the etymology for the word wizard?

"wifmen" ? The wife of a man?
