However, I am in favor of a general rule that women should put it up when they are done and men should put it back down just to be considerate and fair. The only other reason the seat and lid must be closed is so the dogs don't use it as a drinking fountain.
And because leaving it open sprays bacteria into the air: http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/health/2...rrhea-disease/

If you live alone be my guest. It's whatever you like. If you live with others, put it down. Everyone should be closing the lid when flushing.

I put the seat up when using it and put it back down when finished. Common courtesy in my book.

If I was by myself, sure I'd leave it up.

I've never understood how women can sit on a toilet that they have not looked at, then have the nerve to complain about getting stuck in the bowl or sitting on droplets of pee.

The fact that ANYONE, man or woman, would fall into the toilet for not checking the seat is about as stupid as asking the question whether the lid should be left up or down. This question is as old as the W.C.

For one, toilet seats come with a lid for a reason. If they weren't necessary they would have been done away with a long time ago. Secondly, when you live alone and are used to it always being down and then have company come over and a guy leaves the seat up it is not an expected occurance. So it's not as stupid as you would think.

For men:

1. Put the seat up if you are going to pee standing.
2. Put the seat down, and the lid, when you are done.

It's a germ issue. The lid staying down keeps the air cleaner. Plus aesthetically, it's just nicer.
If the top lid stays down when you guys pee, it gets all gross.

WHy do all this extra work, when in fact the work should only be done when needed. Men just dislike doing illogical things. I dont think I will ever understand how this has become an issue for so many couples. Its not as if ladies, put the toilet seat up after they use it, just to be thoughtful of their men?
It does not work that way. It's a germ problem. That is the point of keeping it all closed up. I don't think it's healthy to have all those germs floating around.
