Why even use the word "friend" - associate might have been more accurate- Go for it- but if it is case of picking the low hanging fruit because you are to lazy to hunt further afield that might show a lack of class...BUT as I said if he is just someone who was an associate...I can sort of see it---IF he was actually a friend in a brotherly way to your ex..I in the position of your ex would really resent both of you- and feel insulted..The ex will think that now his "friend' has intimate knowledge of what was his private domain..in the over all to be honest with you...it's not really a good idea.
