my boyfriend drinks very infrequently. he will have a few beers a few times a year. its kind of annoying when i want to get a drink at a restaurant or just chilling at home because i feel dumb drinking alone, but its not that big of a deal.
I don't really drink much myself, so it wouldn't be a dealbreaker if I liked the person, but I would prefer a guy who drinks socially. I have a friend in his 30s who has never drank any alcohol and wants to keep it that way, but he doesn't mind if people drink around him and he'll serve alcohol to guests at his home. Still, I'd prefer a guy who at least enjoys having a glass of wine at dinner (and can recommend something for me) over someone who refuses to drink EVER.
I have dated two non drinkers.... it's doable, but not preferred. BTW both were in 'recovery'. That is basically what I find at my stage of the game...the non drinkers have had issues in the past. Neither judged me. Both weren't upset if I drank in front of them, however I never went past a glass or two of wine at dinner. But, as a person without substance abuse problems...even at my age...every once and awhile I like to let loose and get faced at my favorite haunt... something you can't do with a non drinker. It is fun to date someone who doesn't mind doing that with you ever now and then. Yeah maybe I sound immature...but hey it's me. LOL
My fella is not in recovery.. His dad was an abusive alcoholic and it pretty much turned my BF off to alcohol. I will have an occasional drink around him, but not often. I actually like it that he doesn't partake. We have a lot more time to do other things rather than spend time and money on alcohol. It's pretty refreshing!!
