From What I read about it, he said there were issues with the controls not responding properly and ran through a checklist on that. He did not say honey we are about to crash. The plane was in level flight the whole time and she would not have thought there was anything wrong unless he said something. On the other hand, I personally don't like "jokes" that deal with emergencies or potential for bodily harm, so while it is not as bad as it could sound, still not the best idea. He could have just as easily made up some other mid flight checklist to do that did not involve controls, like even hey, this one gauge over here is giving me a weird reading, while the backups seem fine, let me troubleshoot that.

Very weird proposal, And a bit overboard given she had to ponder over a situation they might not have survived had it been real. Though if they end up having a happy long-term marriage it will be a hell of a cocktail party story!
