I wish we weren't so fixated on age in this country. No wonder people lie about their age on online dating sites.
When I was 39 I got involved with a 21-year-old. I originally thought he was older (mid to late 20s), he thought I was younger (also late 20s -- good aging genes!). I knew it couldn't last, as we didn't have a whole lot in common other than raging hormones whenever we were within 100 feet of each other (well, a big intellectual connection too, I should add -- that is HUGE for me), but I had gone through some horrendous medical stuff the semester before, and he was EXACTLY what I needed at that point in my life. I will always remember him with great fondness.
So OP, depends on what you're looking for. Have fun, meet lots of women of different ages, and just see who you click with.
The OP is a guy, though. No guy needs to be in a serious relationship with a woman more than 5 years older than him unless he just can't get anyone else or she's ridiculously attractive. So, as I said before, a 50 year old guy should be dating women in the 35-55 range.
This simply illustrates what a limited exposure you have had to people in the real world. There are many many such serious relationships (I am in one) and marriages, and no, the man is not desperate, nor the woman ridiculously attractive.
