I generally like a very pretty face on a woman. I generally don't like one who is overly fat either. But a pretty face is deal maker or breaker. If you have the type of face I can't look at, then that's a problem. As far as pretty face goes, there is a whole spectrum of them. So with that said, I can find myself attracted to a wide variety of women.
Your post reminded me of an interview with Johnny Depp. I never, for one second, thought the mother of his children was beautiful. Apparently, she was wearing a backless dress, at the function he met her at. She had a beautiful back...then when she turned around and he saw her eyes, he was completely smitten. Hmmmm one just never knows what's going to be the magnet for someone! LOL
Actually, Vanessa Paradis was quite lovely when she was in Girl on a Bridge (La Fille Sur Le Pont) but more in a down to earth approachable way and not flawless Hollywood beauty way. She's still pretty good looking now but she really had the Zooey Deschanel pixie appeal back then.
the closer you are to this ideal the more beautiful you are perceived to society. It's not fair but that's how it is
I agree with you and I don't think that beauty is a subjective preference. I think that there are certain physical traits that the vast majority of people will find beautiful.
What I also agree with you about is that life really not fair, it never has been, and it never will be. Some people are born with powerful advantages while others are born with crippling disadvantages.

Skin color and tone are subjective. Skin texture is more universal. One can have any skin tone but still have bad skin. Bad skin would be a universal turnoff, where good skin would be a universal turn on.

Symmetry and balance are pretty universal as well.
And probably some gender defining characteristics.
I tend to like "cute" over handsome. It is probably a little related to the fact that I tend to come across as a bit younger and someone who looks more "youthful" will seem to be my age.
what makes a woman or man beautiful to one person and not so much to another? I notice couples who sometimes seem mismatched and I just wonder what makes some people so attractive and others not so much?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder?? Without a shadow of a doubt, someone will either attract you or they won't. There is no universal formula (thank the big sky voice).

What makes one person adore cheesecake, another able to take or leave it while yet another absolutely despises it?
Easy peasy, Japanesey!
