The funny thing about this is when I was around 26 or so, and the holder of one dinky bachelors degree, I remember thinking I wouldn't date a woman without a bachelors degree and distinctly remember having this conversation with my co-worker who agreed with me.

Well, around 10 years and two additional degrees later, I don't really care about that. There's other things that are more important, and I've realized in those 10 years, that it is SO HARD to find those things, that I would never let a degree be a dealbreaker.

I think its a screening tool a bit crass but us guys have our own screening tools.

Now it would be really funny if the woman demanding a guy has a degree doesn't.

I suspect it is just the age group you are looking to date. If they are young women in their early 20s they have probably just finished school. They would be in college from 18-22 and have a lot more experience of being in school than being out in the real world. Once they get more life experience they will probably put less importance on a degree and more importance on character and work ethics.

Possibly people require someone have a degree in order to date them due to preference be it for status, perceived connotations, attraction, or compatibility.

They think a degree would open the door to more opportunities.

I prefer men with college degrees for several reasons. Everyone's experience is different, but my personal experiences have shown me that men with degrees write better, speak and communicate better, dress better, are less likely to have children out of wedlock, are less likely to commit crimes, are more likely to have stable careers and be homeowners, AND I usually find them more physically attractive too. You can say that's all bs, but when I'm on dating sites, I can usually tell when someone doesn't have a degree just by looking at their photos. So for me, I take all those things into account and if a man doesn't have a degree but he otherwise meets my standards, it wouldn't be a dealbreaker.

I wonder what they think of those who are successful business owners without college degrees.

They think they are gainfully employed. Again, not all women request a degree if he has a decent enough job in the first place. I don't know any woman turn down a 'firefighter' or 'mechanic' because, sorry, they don't have a BA degree. Only on here they say it happens.
