The reason I wasn't totally 100% thrilled with "The Notebook" I guess was because I couldn't relate to the personalities of the lead characters. I didn't think that the female lead was nice enough or openly-loving and affectionate enough for her to be attractive to me personally as a guy (unlike the female lead in "A Walk to Remember", who was). Also the male lead character was way too much of a "tough/gruff/sarcastic/super-macho guy" stereotype, for me to like him very much...I am kinda more a fan of the more sensitive / underdog male stereotype, who ends up winning the girl's heart, in the end...
I think you just zeroed in on why some love movies appeal to some & not others..
In the Notebook Allie had a spirited character, complex, compassionate & she loved deeply. Those are things I imagine myself to be or admire.. Then Noah is my "type" willing to build a house to express his love, passionate, Sexy, playful, and willing to challenge Allie..
I have seen romances movies where the guy was unappealing to me and its hard to get into the story..
for those people that think that porn ruins relationships because it gives men unrealistic view of women both sexually and physically.....I feel the same way about Rom-Com's, real men in real relationships don't do what guys in Rom-Com's do...movies like the notebook give some women a false set of expectations..

but they could take lessons; be interested in the whole women , be playful, be spontanoeus, be a bird if your girl wants to be a bird, Let her know that you adore her..

Some very interesting points...many thx for sharing more about your POV on the movie, as it helped me to understand the other side of the equation better! I confess that I hadn't really consciously thought of it that wy before, in the manner you had outlined, before you had mentioned it...
