In cold approaches. Just this evening I get out of my car and walk to a shop I was going to. Two girls strike up a conversation with me.
Historically for me, when talking to strangers two is a key number. I can think of many occasions when I've either been with a friend and we have striked up a conversation. Or the other way around as in my first sentence in this thread.
Someone by themselves is much less likely to be sociable and open up. Same for large groups.
