It's something you are willing to share with someone who are getting to know. Would I walk around outside and tell a complete stranger........."Hey I can't sleep without the TV ON". So that's what the question means, something light and silly about you that you are willing to share.
I remember I asked a woman to tell me something about her I can't tell by just looking at her and she says
"I was engaged before"
I hung up the phone and turned on the game because I was stunned someone could be that stupid.

I see a lots of people on OKC see this question asking you to reveal something very personal about yourself but to me I see it as...."Tell me something silly about yourself that I can't tell by looking at you?"
Anyone else agree that the purpose of this question is to generate fun conversation instead of something very personal?
I was on OkCupid for a while and I think I answered that question with something like, "I sometimes wear socks that have holes." As for the second part where it is asked if the question is important to me, I clicked on Not at all important.

So when someone posts something fairly trivial, obviously they simply don't want to automatically tell the world anything more private than that. Although thanks to this thread I'm tempted to change my OKC response to something just horrible (and made-up), like, "My greatest fantasy is to simultaneously make love to the cast of The Golden Girls, IN THEIR CURRENT STATES."

I really have to wonder if anyone out there answers that question with something really private, something which people just wouldn't want to know at ALL.
I can just imagine a perfectly normal profile, and then:
I asked this girl from OKC tonight on the phone............Tell me something silly about yourself I can't tell by just looking at you"
I can't believe she struggled to answer that question which maybe a reason i won't want to meet her.
Then when she did answer it was something stupid which she could have just kept to herself
"I used to play basketball"
Is there any response a woman could give you to any question on any subject at any time which you could possibly find acceptable?
