True love is not flowers and violins. It's grit and steel. It's the willingness and ability to stand by each other when the rest of the world falls to crap, you're broke, you're sick, and you're on each other's last flippin' nerve. It's picking your battles when you fight--and true love does incorporate discord--and coming to terms with the fact that your partner will tick you off again at some point, and again, and again after that. It's fighting fairly, and forgiving mistakes and human frailty. It's maintaining yourself and your own values even as you give of yourself and share with your partner. It's knocking boots. It's not keeping score of who does what for whom and who owes whom what, and it's sacrifice even though at times it's inconvenient or an outright pain in the arse. It's courage and vulnerability, and the courage to be vulnerable, to hand someone your heart without reservation, knowing that there is a chance they might break it. True love is ballsy.

Knowing this is what enables me to actually feel sorry for some of the folks on here. Not the kind ones who haven't found love yet, but the ones who kill it with pettiness, whininess, superficiality, self-centeredness, bitterness, and self-absorption. There's hope for the first group, but no chance in hell for the second, and that's too bad, because they're their own worst enemies and are missing out on what is one of life's most rewarding experiences.

I meant a perfect or idealized love relationship, not necessarily a perfect partner per se.
