I ask because my own observation is that when someone suspects cheating, not only are they almost always right, but the real scale and depth of the cheating is usually about 1000 times worse than they ever imagined.

I lived with my boyfriend for many years before we got married but very early on in our relationship an old friend came back from overseas. He really wanted to see her and being young and insecure, I didn't want him to. Well he went anyway and I was sure they started having an affair or at least, slept together. He denied it then and 29 years later, and long divorced, I asked him again. He said he never slept with anyone else the whole 13 years we were together.
I've suspected before, and been wrong. However, I think my suspicions were well warranted and could have easily turned into it given more time.
I think cheating is the best way for a relationship to end, no hassles. It's done and that's that. My last long relationship, I remember hoping that she'd say she cheated so it'd end. Needless to say, I just ended it lol
I have friends who drive me insane with their paranoia. They suspect everything and I have to calm them down before they go attacking their bf/husband.
For instance, 2 nights ago my friend called me complaining that her boyfriend got a text on his phone that said "I just uploaded some new pictures. Go to my website to see them <insert website name>. Sarah". She freaked out and thought he was cheating on her and called me. I explained to her that it was a spam text. "But it was from our ### area code", she said. I told her it doesn't matter, it's still spam and I've gotten texts like that before and I've never put my number anywhere on the internet.
Wow. Of course some who have suspected have been wrong. But , unfortunately, I will agree with you that usually they are not wrong and usually it IS even worse than what the imagined scenario is. What do you define as cheating?
Same here. Best part was that it was a pregnancy scare, too. Such a charming question, to hear, "Well, is it MINE?"
I just kind of shut my eyes, took a deep breath, sighed, and said, "You know, if I wasn't having thoughts about dumping you before, I'd be having them now. But yes, it would be."
Fortunately, it was nothing, just some post-Pill crazy hormones. And yes, I did dump him. Not only was he insulting to ask, he was stupid, because we spent nearly all of our free time together. Not sure where or how he thought I'd have the time or opportunity.
Never outright caught her in the act, but had strong evidence. She had an office job and every Tues. night she would come home and change to go to a ceramics class. Ceramics is messy with the clay and paint and all, and she always washed off her makeup, ditched the earrings and threw on crappy sweatpants and a stained T-shirt. I started noticing she applied fresh makeup and wore better clothes to ceramics class. After about a month I had to satisfy my curiousity so I drove by the old ladies house that hosted the class....and no her car wasn't there. There were other times too but that's pretty compelling evidence in my book.
Well... absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. If your gut is telling you that they are cheating, it is very hard to totally remove those thoughts from your mind, even if you never "prove it" one way or the other.
You would have to observe someone's every move to truly know.
