Yep definitely passionate about travelling. My life pretty much revolves around it (well, I'd like it to at least!). I guess I could search the classifieds and various websites for travel buddies (I've actually used them in the past, but travelled with people from different countries). Also meeting people in backpackers, but again they're foreigners.
At least in Canada, there are adventure tour companies that are specifically designed for singles, people without a spouse or a buddy to go with. Is there anything like that in Australia? You may not find love but at least you're not limiting yourself by needing to have a companion to go.

would be even easier to meet fellow young travellers by staying at hostels. i can't imagine anyone not being able to meet people while doing that.
For those who aren't familiar, these clubs/bars are popular in Japan. It's mostly just for companionship/fun, but surprisingly some hostesses and hosts do go on dates with clients outside of regular hours elsewhere. I wonder how they guarantee the safety of hosts and hostesses? Japan seems like a pretty safe society overall, but there are still the odd creepy types.
I wonder if a similar concept would ever catch on in America or the West? I mean there are plenty of lonely people who don't necessarily just want sex, just some conversation, someone to unburden their problems to. Even though there are different cultural attitudes there I think this is universal, and a lot of people just lack friends. A lot of men who visit prostitutes, believe it or not, don't just want sex, they often want the companionship and the human touch...
Heck if the price was right i wouldn't mind paying for something like that.
What do you think? Do you think they'd be popular? Why or why not?
There is a chain of these that already exists in this country. It's called "Hooters."

Is the intention to hook people up? lol. Well I've gone on tours like Trek America and a similar thing here before, so I would be into that sort of thing anyway.
Japanese culture is not as gregarious and extroverted as American. Here we don't need to pay to go to a place where people will make conversation with us.
Ahh yes, I think that's it but the hostess clubs are a little more than just socializing though. It also serves the purpose of helping businessmen foster trust with each other because they're kind of uptight normally. The hostesses help ease the tension. This I can understand. I don't really understand why men who are not businessmen go though.

Unless, of course, your local bar has a cover charge.
Well, if there's a cover charge then both genders have to pay it in America.

I think some people underestimated the importance of socialising, even if it seems 'fake' or not organic, that's why they look down hostess clubs as a Japanese peculiarity. I used to think the idea was odd at first, before I learned to examine my Western assumptions. A lot of people are like 'well there are strip clubs' or 'what's wrong with bars'. Well if you spent a night in my shoes you might understand better.
One possibility is that in other cultures it is regarded as more acceptable for a young man to devote himself to his studies or to business, so that by 40 he's a VP, or a partner at his law firm, or a full-professor... but still unattached (and not by choice!). The culture accommodates that, offering venues for assuaging the loneliness. In the US, we would unfortunately take a dim and deprecating view. "What, you're a decent looking guy and you make $200K, but you can't get a date? What a freakin' loser!"

No, they're not a dating service, they cater to single travellers. I know one woman who met her fiance that way, so it's not out of the realm of possibility. You have to put yourself in situations to have opportunities.

Some of my friends in Kuala Lumpur invited me to one once with Russian/Ukranian hostesses. I was terrified and said no, in retrospect it might have been an interesting experience, if expensive.

DH went to one while in Germany. The girls were very aggressive... they kicked out the group because they only wanted drinks and wouldn't buy any for the girls.
