You're spot on laorbust61, her first husband did step out with someone at work. It happened 30 years ago, but that hurt never disappeared. I wish I had never brought it up ... would have saved me a lot of pain. She was in love but seems not anymore ... she's not willing to compromise her feelings. Anyway other distractions in her life made it easy to end the relationship. She just became a grandmother.

OK,.. so I am over the hill and on a downhill slide but thoughts are either
1.. did her ex husband leave her for a younger woman?
2. Did you talk A LOT about the younger woman at work?

There has to be a reason if everything was going along smoothly and then all of a sudden she ends it. Something has to have happened that perhaps you were not aware of, did you pressure her to get married or perhaps talked about how pretty the younger woman is at work?

Of course there is that other word.. hormones.. which cause a lot issues.

Along with how the topic of younger co-workers was discussed, I've been wondering how long the two of you were together. You said that you thought about marrying her. If you've been together a long time, could it also be that she got tired of waiting for a proposal?

In response to Keeper: We dated for 2 and 1/2 years and I learned over that period to be very careful talking about women, even on TV. She could but I could not, so I avoided comments. She is very sensitive and certainly has insecurities caused by her husband's infidelity. And yes, he did leave her for the other woman (at the time I don't think she was younger pe se, as they were all in their 20's). Since our break up 5 weeks ago I've been probing her for the reasons, and have concluded that she believes I made her feel old because I compared her to other women. She just couldn't handle that aspect and so decided to end things. Since she has other options to occupy her time (family and friends) I think she decided it wasn't worth the trouble having that angst. Honestly, I believe I was very respectful of her concerns, but in the long run I just couldn't avoid a slight at some point in the relationship. She even told me that mentioning how nice her hair looked one day after having it done meant I didn't like it before, so that was interpreted as a slight. Now you may think she is a bit crazy, but she is a wonderful person and I really did enjoy my time with her. Sounds weird but true. I hope she comes around.

If she's still hurting over infidelity that occurred in her 20's, she's WAY overdue for counseling! She can't take compliments without giving them a negative spin? idk, OP, seems like maybe you dodged a bullet. This woman sounds like Baggage City. She's too old for this kind of behavior.
