Lol typical women with opinions all over the place. These are obviously before and after pictures and it is supposed to be clear that the "after" guy is supposed to look better. The guy in 2 has more muscle mass, is more lean, he even did his hair, shaved his face, and the lighting is better, yet many women here are still picking guy 1 LOL. It's almost like they know guy 2 is "supposed" to look better but they don't want to openly admit it. I'm pretty sure all the men in this thread would unanimously pick #2 for their physique if they had a choice. I would feel terrible if I put all that work into my body only to be told by a woman that I was more attractive before I did anything.
They have done studies to show that women tend to have great variance in what they find attractive whereas men are more uniform in what they consider attractive. I think the posts here so far have demonstrated that.
Well, I am from California, ladies here myself included do not like the body builders' type. (Please do not hate me for saying that I am only telling the truth) There are always exceptions to the rule of course, but most women here are into swimmer's body type. Long lean fit, low body fat.
I'm a male and I lift, but not to serious about it. I can say that is most demotivational when I see real body builders in bars. Accurse it not look good. But at first place many of them start with one ugly asymmetric body. When they acquire some mass they are just ugly folks with muscle mass. Theirs ugly bone structure is still always there. So question "do women like bodybuilders" is somewhat misleading as in bodybuilders range you can set many kind of people.
I find it hillarious how women complain about how men have unrealstic standards of womens bodies then put in the same position women do the same thing with men lol

OK, the initially counterintuitive appeal of the scrawny-guy is now starting to dawn on me. Many women are saying that...
- - The “muscular” guy’s life revolves around the gym. He’d have no time for a girlfriend. The girlfriend would just be an appendage instead of a priority.
- - The “muscular” guy is narcissistic and obsessed with appearance; he’s preening and vain. That’s a character flaw and a basic immaturity.
I get that. As a weightlifter myself, I’m not impressed with guy #2. He’s more interested in cosmetic appeal of muscles than real strength. There’s something effete about him. Plus, his transformation appears to be more of a quick-fix than a lifelong commitment.
So if I may, let me rephrase the OP’s question: on purely physical grounds and disregarding how pursuit of fitness does or does not affect personality, to what extent is bulk-muscle (in men) appealing to women?

On purely physical grounds, Guy #2 is a lot more appealing. Guy #1 isn't sexy to me. His body doesn't make me lust after him, but I could easily lust after Guy #2.
I don't see what's wrong with a guy who wants to put in a little time at the gym to look like #2. There are plenty of men who look like #2 whose lives don't revolve around living in the gym or rejecting any type of food that has even a little bit of fat. Although #1 isn't bad, I'm much more attracted to #2, and as long as he wouldn't put our relationship on the backburner and devote himself COMPLETELY to working out, I'd much rather have a #2 over a #1.
