I could ask the same thing! Why give me your number if all you're going to do is ignore my texts and phone calls? Irritating!
I never give a guy my number or ask for a number if I have no intention of contacting. Now if I do contact u and u turn out to be a freak, that's a whole different story.

3 out of 8?. You are probably very attractive to have 3 out of 8 guys contact you. Not bad. If I ask for a # from a woman at a bar its usually Platonic, but then again I'm too old to be picking up women at bars.
In all seriousness, they're probably erring on the side of caution by getting the number just in case. Sometimes after walking away from a conversation with someone your feelings for them grow, and other times they wither. I've had several times where I didn't get the woman's number, then later wished I had a way to contact her. If I were the kind of guy who always got the number, even if I didn't use them most of the time, I at least wouldn't have that problem.
As a compliment or as a natural way to end a conversation...
Sometimes I've asked for a number with the intention to call, wounded up feeling like I won't be able to make something out of it,
for example i got the number of a girl, but then the day after I shattered my tailbone in a lot of pieces and they had to cut out a good portion of meat from my back to fix it, I didn't feel like starting something up in a period when I'd be unable to do anything half as physical as sitting down for 3 months.. and once those 3 months had passed... well the trail had gone cold you know.
Then there was the girl my friend took a number of, and then met 2 days later, both of them pretending they hadn't met as my other friend presented her as his new girlfriend to the both of us... awkward...
And like someone said;
why do ladies hand your numbers out like candy getting our hopes up and everything when you won't even think about answering a call 90% of the time?
