Actually in my experience, crazy attracts the boring. I am a bit on the crazy side and attract all kinds of boring, responsible, guys with great jobs. Problem for me is, I find them boring. I like a little side of crazy.
Most of the time when I get these, I reply "Hello, what's on your mind?" and rarely get a response. Therefore I must conclude one of three things: They didn't read my profile because they didn't answer the question at the top of my profile (and I state, failure to answer the question is an automatic deal breaker) and it's totally rated "G," not something nasty or obscene; they were surfing while drunk and don't remember sending the message; OR they really have nothing on their mind. Ever.
I think to show how obnoxious some people are about conversation starters with online dating, I am going to say the most ridiculous things online for a week. If it brings me any success, I will create a thread stating my story.
Hopefully someone with personality at least engages me, but since online dating is mostly based on APPEARANCE, it doesn't really matter what is said. The OP needs to learn this.
OMG, this is insane, the crazy comments are working. Wow. I may have to retract all previous comments about this thread. So far I have 2 out of 5 women responding to my crazy comments.

I sent a "thanks but no thanks," and one got mad and said I was a jerk for not wanting to get involved with single mothers. She even went so far as to give me a bad "date review," not having ever met me. I address this in my profile, just to make it clear, this person reviewing me is a crazy person.

I hate trying to talk to a single mom on the phone because the child keeps interrupting her and then that kills the conversation flow
Upon further review, making abstract, original comments by cold approach OLD has netted me about 2 times the normal responses compared to "Hi, how are you today?" But, those responses still dwindled off after my initial comment if I didnt continue to create conversation. The end result is after sending about 50 messages to random women, I still netted the same amount of interest from them as my typical 'simple, but boring' conversation starter.
Again, I know guys that obtain phone number from women consistently at anywhere between 2 and 20 back and forth messages. And they are never creative in their approach.
It really boils down to how attractive one is. OLD is all about instant physical attraction, and if the guy isn't hot, he will probably deal with about 200 rejections before he gets a phone number. IME anyway... but I am probably considered less than average in looks in the OLD World. So for me, what I say yields the same results.

When a certain photo is not generating any results then you must change it. No point in sticking with the same pic if it's not generating any feedback.

Not going to make much a difference. Most of my photos are typical photos out with friends, action type shots, or shots of me on vacation.
And in most situations, my grill isn't much better looking in one photo compared to another.
Some guys are considered attractive, and don't have to work at it. I'm not a guy that doesn't have to work at it.
I will say, that my random abstract comments did earn about 3-4 times more profile views from the women I messaged, but again, conversation stumbled if I didnt stay on it. When a woman is interested, she has something to say. When she isn't.... crickets can be heard.
