A common explanation for why women can have more casual sex is that they are more picky, and I believed in that as well before I did a thought experiment.
In this thought experiment we have 4 men and 4 women, and they are on a trip together and have absolutely no barriers to casual sex. A is the most attractive, D is the least attractive. The women want sex once every second day, and the men want sex every day. They will have sex with the best option, but we assume there is some variation
Night 1:
Man A - Lady A
Man B - Lady B
Night 2: (Man B do not want to have sex with D)
Man A - Lady C
Man C - Lady D
Night 3:
Man A - Lady B
Man B - Lady A
Night 4: (Man B is horny and has sex with D. Hence C gets nothing.)
Man A - Lady C
Man B - Lady D
This is the number of women and the quality the men had
Man A: 4 B
Man B: 3 C
Man C: 1 D
Man D: 0
And among the women
Lady A: 2 A/B
Lady B: 2 A/B
Lady C: 2 A
Lady D: 2 B/C
So in this case all of the women are quite satisfied, especially A, B and C. But among the men only A and B is satisfied, and C and D get almost nothing.
And we did not assume women are picky. We only assumed
1. Men want sex more than women
2. They will pick the most attractive option, with some variation
And because of this the women could just pick and choose while the men had to drop their standards. Hence it is not about women being picky, but that men want sex more than women.
That also explains why a lot of men struggle with getting sex during their early 20s, because a lot of women and men have casual sex during their early 20s.
There are five men and two canoes, and no canoe can have less than 2 men at time nor more than three, how do you get all five men from one shore to the other ..... ? Oh, and the ugly man cannot share a canoe with the bodybuilder.
Apart from the thought experiment which is nothing more than an allocation problem with a determined outcome based on the assumptions, your assumptions do not fit your title. A far higher percentage of men are emotionally open to casual sex than women. If you put 10 men and one willing woman in a large canoe, everyone will have sex!
