That's just ridiculous. I have the every-other-check payment system with my mom when we meet on the weekends. I certainly wouldn't want my romantic relationship to be the same.

My ex and I alternated who paid the bill and it wasn't awkward for us. Dutch, on the other hand, would be awkward for me. Do you always ask for separate checks? Do you split the bill evenly or only pay for your stuff? Figuring out my exact half plus tip on a combined bill is just a headache.
