Well maybe not the sex part.

But everything else, surely. Just standardise it. Personally I feel if you're old enough to die for your country, you're old enough to do anything.

OP, i didn't read any of the posts besides your opening one but just wanted share my quick thoughts:

it will never happen. we have a cultural custom that once he hit the age of majority, you are liberty to live your live as an adult as you please as long as you stay within criminal legal limits, which includes consensual sex between adults (e.g., no statutory rape, no non-consensual forced rape, etc).

the only reason we have a legal drinking age is because Congress will only grant federal funds for interstate highways if states maintain a legal age limit for drinking alcohol. and the courts have determine that this age limit is rationally related to the purpose of the funds, which is reducing highway accidents and fatalities where was alcohol as significantly reduced.

Marriage should be abolished.

If you want to grant another person rights, just talk to a lawyer.

No. It's actually because of previously mentioned age of maturity set by church in Medieval times. Church had set up age of maturity at age of 21 and it got lowered only when European countries/leaders were faced with military shortage and a legal obstacle to draft more recruits for wars. Then they decided to lower the age of maturity to 18 y/o age limit. Similar thing happened in most countries in the future, including USA. The need for more recruits was much more important than fixing all legislative inconsistencies and many countries kept the laws that bans you from entering brothels, clubs, banning you from drinking alcohol, buying cigarettes, or be officially mature, but you were old enough to go to war. Then they decided to fix it over the time by lowering other age limits as well.

Some countries still have this disparity in their legal system and it is due to other reasons, not because they never thought of fixing it... it's most often connected to stance to i.e. exterminate alcohol altogether from mainstream culture, idea by a group of conservatives who are influential enough to influence the lawmakers to keep status quo until "better" days when that idea would have wider support.

Maybe it should be raised to 20, at least then they're out of their teens. I'm turning 24 next month and personally, I want to wait until I'm near 30 for marriage and kids. Your 20s should be a decade of adventure and finding yourself-- Get an education, travel a bit, meet a bunch of people, and then settle down with that one person. I do feel that some people who get married very early partially do it because they don't want to miss that one chance and potentially be faced with the hardship of loneliness later on in life. I can't blame them, because it's like being in a casino and you win a decent sum of money on your first try or two. From there, your choices is to either cash out or keep going. In addition, fertility goes way down for women at 30, so that is something else to think about if you're the type who wants to have kids.

I've missed out on some potential love and marriage material and was in love with a girl over 3 years ago and at times I feel I should've cashed out myself, in retrospect, but I'm not quite ready to be an ''old man'' just yet. I must admit, it is getting harder by the year to find a girl who is my type and is single. Where I'm at in the Midwest, I know quite few of my classmates who have a kid, married, or are in a long-term relationship-- practically married.

I'm 25, and I disagree for government control over legal marriage at the age of 25. I think 18-19 is better.

I have seen many young couples late teens - early 20s who fall in love and want to get married. But they have no idea what they want out of marriage, or life or anything. But they are in love and think they want to spend the rest of their life together.

A real life example. A mid-20 something couple announces that they are getting a divorce after two years of marriage. Reason being, they still love each other, but they have recently discovered that they are not heterosexuals. They are probably right about that.

So my question, would it not be a good idea to raise the marriage age to 25 to give people more time to figure out what they want from life, what they plan to do with their lives, etc. before they get married?

Or am I expecting too much, that people are old enough to have things like their sexual orientation worked out, before they get married? It seems to me that the divorce rate could be dramatically decreased by raising the marriage age. What does everyone think?

It is nobody else's business what age you are when you get married. People who want to stick their noses into other people's business is why the United States is where it is today. Liberals want to control everyone else, but they don't have enough sense to control themselves...I won't say you ask an incredibly stupid question, but I will say I think you have trouble when it comes to thinking. That is only my opinion, and really means nothing at all.

Sigh....She was quite clearly referring to the age of consent, which is already 18 in most states, so nothing would change. Bit defensive, are we?
