I'm trying to figure out what you mean by 'judgments', here.
I think women do tend to try to understand a man's personality using cues they can see. This includes stuff like how he holds himself and how he dresses and acts.
We do this because we care a lot about personality.
So, if how you dress and act doesn't accurately reflect your personality, then you are kind of like a woman who binds her breasts to make herself look flat chested: You are turning off people who might otherwise want you.
As for terms, where I live 'rugged' means fat and with a neck beard. By contrast, the look of guys who actually do stuff like mountain climbing (there is a lot of that around here) is thin and wiry and I like that. I like it because I like to climb mountains, and a guy who looks like he does too, well, he looks compatible with me.
Does this help any?
Yes that does help.
I know women care a lot about the personality of the person they date, and that's what I mean by making judgments about a guy's personality based on how he looks. Obviously girls don't know me when they first see me but they probably imagine what I'm like as a person.
They way I dress probably does a good job of showing who I am. I am definitely the action sports kind of guy and I'm also the kind of person that's going to stick to his principles (couldn't think of a better way to say that). So that's probably all that really matters.
Now that I think about it women probably don't care how I dress, stand, and shave as long as I like it and I don't look like an idiot.

Not "fat" with a "neck beard". Not some "scrawny" mountain climber yuppie dude either.
wouldnt change my appearance to a pretty boy just to get girls
Me neither. Besides, I have my 'girl'. Met her in 1971 when I had a full beard. Still together and I have a goatee/mustache and the only stubble I have is on my head. Hee hee

I'm talking first sight here. What really gets women excited?
