"I want a guy who is independent, has goals, and knows what he wants out of life"="I want a guy with money."

"That's just my preference"="I am extremely prejudiced against certain people, and want nothing to to with them. But admitting that would make me look bad. So, instead of coming out and admitting I am prejudiced, I will hid behind a mild, benign-sounding word like 'preference' instead."

"I'm just not ready for a relationship right now." = "I am not attracted to you."

"I don't want to ruin our friendship." = "I am not attracted to you."

"I should warn you, I have a sarcastic sense of humor." = "I am a bitter, cruel, hostile person. But I am also passive-aggressive as hell. I don't have the guts to insult people openly, so I pretend my vicious, mean-spirited barbs are just attempts at humor."
These are all true. Especially the Relationship one, I told that to girls I use to mess around with before I met my GF.

If you were a woman, how would you recommend she phrase her request to slow down (note: she likes the guy)?

'We broke up' sometimes means, 'S/he doesn't know it yet, but I am considering breaking up and want to find out what my other options are'.

Oh, and 'We have not had sex in years' always means, 'We have not had sex in hours.'

Tell him she(you) needs some space at the moment, you can even make some BS excuse. The truth is you want space, not that you want to just be friends.

They don't care about a guy "moving so fast" if they're actually attracted to him.
