I have a friend that's been married three times and you would think they would give up after the third failed marriage but they don't. What are looking for to keep going?

Many are afraid to be alone.

I've met others who have been married 4 or more times. IMHO, these people are toxic. Don't try to figure it out, just stay away.

I have a friend who has been married four times, and the last one seems to be working. Well, to be fair, husband No. 2 died. No 3 is also dead, but she divorced him first. However, he was the only with whom she had a child, but No. 4 is much more of a father than the actual father ever was.

Knew a guy married 8 times. Friends with his attorney who I asked "Why?"

I was told it was a control issue. It's like a kid who sees something and says I must have it.
Once he gets her he then no longer has the desire and moves on to the next one that "he must have".
In this case it was a wealthy man proving he could have any woman he desired.

To me it would not be worth the hassle. He should just rent one for a month.

My dad married 3 times and his sister has about 8 of them. According to him it is a matter of comfort and being taken care of. I found it rather funny because he raised all of us to be independent and not rely on others. Then he changes his tune for his own dysfunctional life.

I went out 2-3 times with an Ex Denver Broncos cheerleader who had been married 4 times.
Once I found that out I figured no matter how beautiful, those guys knew more than I knew about her. Move on.

I think it's optimism. Although I have a friend who is on... #3 or #4 and that's mostly because she wants to be taken care of, but feels living together without being married is a sin. So she gets married.

Wouldn't you think optimism is the person who's about to become spouse #4-5 ?
