Ultimately, though, I emerged wiser, but not more cynical. It took some tough self-talk to convince myself that my ex's dishonesty wasn't something I had "earned" by being trusting and loving, it was simply a flaw in his personality. Ultimately, I trust my own judgment enough that if I think a person is good, the vast majority of the time, they are. There is always that risk that you were wrong about that one person, but honestly, that's not enough of a deterrant for me to be okay with becoming more guarded and cynical than is in my nature to be. I'm just not that person.
It's tragic how those types take people's best qualities and use them to hurt.
If you mean trusting them to be faithful, a good test of that is waiting until marriage to have sex. That way, you know psychologically the person has some self control when it comes to sex.

Unless they're out having sex with other people while you're together and 'waiting'.
Goodness gracious, I am not talking about trusting them to be faithful! I have never had a problem with that.
Talking more about finances, secret wives, other con artistry. And early dating, not a relationship.
How exactly does having a secret wife count as being faithful? That sounds like the ultimate in unfaithful, to me.
I've never had the subject of finances come up in early dating, so there's never been a chance to be dishonest about it. I guess I've been lucky to have avoided con artists. (Probably the closest I've encountered to that would be addicts, but they're not difficult to spot.)
