I think a date is something you plan for, something that isn't a part of everyday life, something that involves leaving the house. Basically it boils down to effort. It's not tied to how much you spend on it either.
I think if someone expresses that they'd like to go on a "real date", it sounds like they may feel things are too settled and routine. A date is fun, shakes things up, but not something you'd want to do all the time.
