I think an awful lot of over-analysis is going into this one!
No kidding, I wonder if there is anything that does not offend someone somewhere for no particular reason.
Cripes already.
Original Poster: If you don't like hearing someone refer to their wife that way then say something to them about it and see what kind of response you get. That should tell you in a very short time if your opinion is skewed and your need to correct the way someone refers to their wife is appreciated.
I've never given it any thought. My husband calls me "woman" or "the woman" all the time - and I know he loves and respects me more than anything. Not a big deal.

I do think context has a lot to do with it. You sort of can tell when it's disrespectful and when it's said to be funny.
I used to work with a guy that when people would ask him if he was married he would answer " The wife is." Needless to say, after getting to know his wife, she only stayed with him for personal reasons, and love wasn't one. They had issues.
I hear guys say it like that, "the wife"... and to be honest, it was always in neutral context.... I don't ever really recall it being used in a negative sense.
To me it like the guy is saying "the boss".... as the joke goes about the wife running the show and the hubby being a little on the henpecked side... IDK....
"Hey Bob, you wanna meet up later and do something, ... I gotta check with The Wife to see if we have any plans."
I suppose if the OP views it the way she does, I guess on a level it might appear distant or slightly cool, but again it never seemed to that way to me.
Agree with this. When I hear "the wife" it appears to be in the context of "the boss". I have heard the same person use my wife and the wife. I guess woman rarely us the husband because when its down to the nitty gritty the wife is the boss.
ITT: A lot of bitter people looking for reasons to get offended.
It is common in Newfoundland to refer to one's wife as "The Missus". I suppose you lot will do your best to find some reason to get your panties in a bunch over that one as well.
I like it when Chowhound calls his wife Mrs. Chow.
On many boards loved ones are abbreviated as DH, DW, DS, DD...for Dear Husband, dear wife, etc.
I have always assumed 'the wife' was just a similar abbreviation.
LOL, it's funny cause technically we're not married..... just been together forever...
