I guess "in love" is hard to define. I've dated, connected on a friendship level with sexual partners etc... but I've never had a moment where I've thought "hey maybe I'm in love now." I feel like I've missed out on something that I might not be able to replicate when I'm older. Are my feelings unusual?
Maybe you have been and didn't know it? Thought it was gas pains?
In your opinion is that mostly the fault of the individual (e.g. they are either inadequate or have unrealistic standards) or of the (unsuccessful) partners (who either are inadequate or have unrealistic standards)?
I say this because I now realize that the problem in my case was my own inadequacies, not those of my dating partners. Now that I have resolved many of my greatest deficits, a special partner has appeared in my life.
I can relate. I didn't date much in college because I knew I was a mess. I'm doing better now but I'm not happy with my career. At times I think my dating partners have picked up on this, but mostly this "deficit" makes me more self-centered and less open to " falling in love", I think.

That makes sense, but maybe a little change of mindset could help a little bit. Maybe stop worrying so much about a job, and just thinking about a job as a way to make money to do what you enjoy. Life isn't about a job, and it doesn't/shouldn't dictate your life. Just use it as a way to enjoy your life outside of your work.
There's a lot of things I hate about my life, we all have it. Just have to find the things that you do really enjoy and focus on those.
You just haven't met the right girl, or you're too self absorbed to be in love.
