I often ask myself this same question. I would like to get married, but I'm almost certain I don't want kids. When I've told people that - including men who were interested in me - I've been told that it's just because I haven't met the right guy yet. Meeting the right guy doesn't change my basic personality traits, goals, or dreams for the future, and I'm not sure how raising children fits into those things for me. Even so, I can't help but wonder if I will suddenly want a to raise a family if I do ever meet the right guy.

I try to avoid women that don't fit into my long term plan so you could say I kill it before it grows into anything more.

Marriage; very outside chance. I don't want to get married because I don't believe in the institution but I could see myself taking a shot if I have a very LTR with a girl.

Having children; absolutely not. I'm childfree and that is something you should NOT compromise on.

Opinions are changeable, the way you phrased your question has me thinking that what you were wanting was advice, or opinion, that backed up the one you already have.
If you really are ready to change, you'll know it, and holding on to an outmoded idea or as you call it a conviction, will seem questionable. If that is happening then don't be afraid to change.
People who stay in the same rut because they're afraid to change, afraid of what others' will say or think, even though the old way doesn't fit them anymore and they know it...get to ask themselves later, what would have happened if I had done that instead of ....

Nobody should EVER have kids unless they truly desire kids.

The marriage thing really is a toss-up. I could see bending on that one for someone very special.

He wouldn't be the right person for me if he was anti-marriage. I'm in my 40's -- I wouldn't have children at this age but I love kids and if he had kids that would be fine with me.

Adopt a child. There are many children who need love & family...
