Actually, there have been many informal polls (on here) and dating websites that show that fat women are absolutely disgusted by fat men and strongly prefer skinny men. The kinds of fat couples you are talking about are more than likely people who met when they were in their prime and packed on the weight after marriage, which is rather common.
Only one problem: There is no shortage of average or even decent looking men that are willing to date an unattractive woman. On the other hand, both unattractive and attractive women seem to only want to get with attractive men and the former will end up settling for average. This is simply because men are wired to find a large number of women to be attractive, while women are biologically wired to be attracted to the top men. Hence, there is absolutely no reason an unattractive women would have to settle for an unattractive man given this fact.
Please don't trot out the alpha male vs beta male argument as to explain this... I've seen hundreds of plain Jane's with plain Joe's....... women that aren't that desirable have to "settle" as well, so that argument is just silly.....

That doesn't contradict my post in any way. More than likely, most of those plain Jane's settled and would trade in their average Joe for an attractive man easily if given the chance.
