The context does matter. This one is in the middle of "I asked how I rank compared to men in past relationships" and "it came out of nowhere". I agree with Tjenkins602 that she didn't need to go there. However, her comment wasn't that you're not good looking. I think drawing that conclusion says something about your mindset, as does asking the question in the first place, even playfully. Maybe something to think about.
I don't see why this is so important, but here it goes. I was at her place. Her mom always used to say that I am cute. That night also she said something similar.... so I winked at my ex and said, "Well, what do you think?" It wasn't even a question but a playful gesture, yet she answered with all seriousness... that I am cute but others are hotter. Make of it what you will.

My best guess is that she is irritated by her mother's constantly fawning over you. And you were definitely fishing for compliments, which is a very irritating personality trait.
